Sucker punch
Brighton and Hove Albion 0 Charlton Athletic 2
A scrappy and unimaginative game last night fitting for the stadium I suppose, which allows one of the worst views in the football league of a match. The 890 Addicks probably would have preferred an inspiring 3 points over an Autumn or Spring weekend but an away win is an away win, and our first since August (6 games but 4 draws).
I listened in on the radio and I guess 'competent' would be a good way to describe how we played, sounding strong in defence and the tackle after a shaky start and quick in the counter-attack with Wagstaff getting an awful lot of mentions. His second goal on his first full league game the sucker punch for Gus Poyet's Brighton, who has had a tough introduction at the Withdean with games against Southampton, Leeds, Norwich and us.
Back to back to wins for the first time since August then and with Leeds and Norwich seemingly winning every time they play, last night's 3 points were vital. Basey and Burton put in really good shifts but Semedo picked up his 5th yellow card of the season and is suspended for Saturday's game. Racon or Shelvey are obvious replacement's to keep the integrity of Parky's Plan B.
I have long kept a watchful eye on Brighton as I have a couple of good mates that are staunch fans. The Withdean is a soulless pit of a ground and you have to really feel for the Seagulls fans who have had to endure it for 10 years as the saga of Falmer dragged on. With construction finally happening, Brighton should (big should) be there for the start of the 2011/12 season and they rightly should be wetting themselves
at the thought.
